Finding inspiration in the most unexpected places

Sometimes, finding motivation for your writing can be hard, especially when you feel like you’ve already explored all of your usual sources. However, you may be surprised to discover that inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places - you just need to know where to look. I’ve found that the following strategies have been beneficial in sparking my creativity and keeping my writing fresh.

Take a walk outside. Whether it’s a short stroll around the block or a longer hike in the woods, being outdoors can be a great way to find inspiration. Nature can provide a sense of peace and clarity that can help you develop new ideas. Look around you and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the outdoors.

Visit a museum or art gallery. Not only can you view beautiful works of art, but you can also learn about different cultures and their history. Learning about another period or culture can spark a creative idea.

Listening to music can be a great way to inspire yourself and relax. There are so many different genres of music out there, so why not explore and see what resonates with you? Music can provide a sense of calm and peace that can help you develop new ideas. For example, when writing for certain characters, I might listen to Nickelback or Linkin Park and then switch to classic 70s tunes for other characters. Music is an incredible source of inspiration and creativity for me, and I find it to be an invaluable tool for motivation.

Read a book. As authors, this may seem like a silly statement, but it is quite astonishing how many of our colleagues do not share the same opinions. Reading works outside of our usual genres can be incredibly liberating and help free up our minds. Gaining a different perspective can effectively break through the dreaded writer’s block and open up a world of creative possibilities.

Talk to people. Having conversations with people can be a great way to find inspiration. Talking to different people can help you gain new perspectives and can help you come up with new ideas.

These are just a few ways I find inspiration in the most unexpected places. Take the time to explore and experiment with different activities and see what works for you. With a little bit of effort, you, too, can find inspiration in the most unexpected places.
